International Collaboration for Adult Mathematics Education: The Case of Adults Learning Mathematics

Posted on November 13, 2011

Introduction: Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM) is a worldwide research forum that brings together professionals and scholars involved in adult learners’ mathematics education at all levels. Through their research and scholarly activities, the organization has informed international and national policies and practices that support all aspects of adult mathematics education. This case study examines the ALM’s mission, activities, and impact on adult learners’ mathematics education. In particular, the study explores the international conference held in Dublin in 2011, which had contributions from 14 countries and focused on the theme of “Mathematical Eyes: A Bridge between Adults, the World, and Mathematics.”

ALM’s Mission and Activities: ALM aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners involved in adult learners’ mathematics education to share their ideas, knowledge, and experiences. The organization seeks to promote research and scholarly activities that contribute to the improvement of adult learners’ mathematics education at all levels. ALM also advocates for policies and practices that support the teaching and learning of mathematics among adult learners.

ALM’s International Conference: The 2011 ALM conference held in Dublin focused on the theme of “Mathematical Eyes: A Bridge between Adults, the World, and Mathematics.” The conference brought together professionals and scholars from 14 countries, who used their “maths eyes” to highlight current issues, opportunities, and challenges for adult learners’ mathematics education. The conference featured presentations, workshops, and plenary sessions that explored the role of mathematics in various aspects of adult learners’ lives.

Conference Highlights: The conference had four major areas of focus, including the work environment, all levels of education, improving public awareness and communication, and supporting active citizenship. Participants used their mathematical eyes to discuss how mathematics can be used to address challenges and create opportunities for adult learners in these areas.

The conference highlighted the need for effective policies and practices to support adult learners’ mathematics education. Participants discussed the importance of innovative teaching methods, the use of technology in teaching, and the role of informal learning in adult learners’ mathematics education. The conference also addressed the importance of developing a positive attitude towards mathematics and promoting public awareness of the value of mathematics in everyday life.

Impact on Adult Learners’ Mathematics Education: ALM’s mission, activities, and conferences have had a significant impact on adult learners’ mathematics education. The organization’s advocacy for policies and practices that support adult learners’ mathematics education has led to positive changes in international and national policies. ALM’s research and scholarly activities have contributed to the development of innovative teaching methods and the use of technology in teaching mathematics to adult learners.

Conclusion: ALM’s activities have demonstrated the importance of international collaboration in promoting adult learners’ mathematics education. The organization has created a platform for professionals and scholars to share their ideas, knowledge, and experiences, leading to the development of effective policies and practices that support adult learners’ mathematics education. The conference held in Dublin in 2011 highlighted the value of mathematics in various aspects of adult learners’ lives and contributed to the development of innovative teaching methods and practices. The impact of ALM’s activities on adult learners’ mathematics education is significant, and the organization continues to play a critical role in advancing the field.
