Intergenerational Problem Solving: MSL ETB and Fahy NS

Intergenerational Problem Solving: MSL ETB and Fahy NS

Posted on December 5, 2019

Through MSL ETB Family Learning funding, MSL ETB and Fahy NS collaborated to create a group where adults and kids could develop their problem-solving skills together. Over several weeks, they worked on new challenges from resources like NRICH and YouCubed, identifying patterns, exploring solutions, improving mental math, and even generalising solutions as algebraic equations. One of the entries even resulted in a nice clear illustration of square numbers. The programme not only improved the problem-solving skills of both adults and kids but also encouraged them to talk about math outside of school.

The intergenerational group of MSL ETB and Fahy NS worked on various challenges to improve their problem-solving skills. They explored solutions, identified patterns, improved mental math, and even learned how to generalise solutions as algebraic equations. One of their entries resulted in a clear illustration of square numbers, which they created while identifying square numbers in a multiplication table. Parents enjoyed learning new math methods, while the children had fun working with them. The tutor also witnessed the development of the participants’ personalities and confidence.
