Ballyfermot Maths Trail: Discovering Maths in Your Local Park

Ballyfermot Maths Trail: Discovering Maths in Your Local Park

Posted on September 3, 2019

St Dominic’s College in Ballyfermot created a Maths Trail in their local park to encourage people of all ages to explore and engage with the mathematics in their community. The trail consists of three sets of questions for different age groups, covering topics such as Space, Shapes, Measure, Time, Probability, Statistics, Ratio & Proportion, and Geometry. The trail also employs a digital approach through the use of QR codes, which eliminates the need to print any documents prior to carrying out the activity. The project was a collaboration between the TY students of St Dominic’s College, IT Tallaght, and Dublin City Council. The students enjoyed identifying the maths all around them during field research, and were surprised at how much maths there was in their local park. The project aimed to help people adopt a positive attitude towards maths and realise that they can do maths while also having fun in their local community.
